La Bruja - Russell Simmons Def Poetry Jam
Caridad de la Luz aka La Bruja (The Witch), is a multifaceted performer
and writer, known for her mesmerizing poetry and characterizations.
This excerpt is taken from her appearance on Russell Simmons Def Poetry
Jam. Her one-woman show Boogie Rican Boulevard - which chronicles three
generations of Puerto Ricans living in the Boogie down Bronx - has
received rave reviews from San Francisco to Switzerland since 1998.
Other acting credits include the Spike Lee joint 'Bamboozled'.
Congress Alley - Congress Alley
Very rare 7" single from 1973 on the US Avco label. All that is known
is that it's a track from an R&B group featuring Lee Andrews who
performed as solo artist and with The Famous Flames and The Famous
Hearts. Norman Jay MBE holds the only other copy in the UK and
regularly plays it out on his legendary Giant 45's Radio Show. Special
thanks to Caren Jeanty (Bayridge, Brooklyn) for tracing this copy.
What It Is - Adriana Evans
After a hiatus of almost seven years, the original pioneer of the Neo
Soul genre has returned. The track 'What It Is' gather all the elements
of her life - jazz, blues, rock and soul - and just walks with them. It
has that 'grit' too - something that is missing in so much of today's
music. Programmed by her husband Dred Scott with Joe Conrad on guitar
and bass, this track marks the return of a truly unique talent.
Lola - DJ's Numark and Pomo
Not content to be a prolific producer within Jurassic 5, world renowned
turntable artist Numark tags team with long time friend and mentor
Pomo, to showcase his work, his way and away from J5's concrete
schoolyards. Not an album as such, more like a demo or an insight into
the mind of a producer, Nu-mark delivers a lesson in beat crafting and
melody making. This cut, a cover of 'Lola' has dusty kicks and snares
running home that famous horn section.
Clap Ya Hands - Chan
Clap Ya Hands 1.72 Mb
Chan tags with former label-mate Akrobatik, and Boston rhyme vet
Ripshop to bless yet another DJ Supreme One masterpiece, bringing the
live show straight to your speaker with the crowd motivating anthem
'Clap Ya Hands'. Each of the three emcees bring their respective styles
to the table, combining to form one memorable posse-cut. Chan is
definitely the artist to watch out for in 2004!
Sounds of the Underground - Double Soul
Sounds of the Underground 1.12 Mb
While many have come and gone in Toronto's fickle hip-hop underground,
Double Soul (Kornflake Saymore and Still Watters, two brothers outta
Southwest Scarboro), have become mainstays by being fans first and
artists second. Initial exposure via our man DJ Crossphader's legendary
mix tapes symbolises how underground hip hop needs to be discovered in
the modern day: that is you gotta go looking for it.
Flamingo Skies - Christa Hughes
Flamingo Skies 1.61 Mb
Recorded on a cold winter's night at Roslin in 1999, this track acts as
a parting present from the incredibly talented Australian singer
Christa Hughes who returned to her hometown of Melbourne the very next
day. Christa laid down two tracks during her time in Scotland: 'I Miss
You' and 'Flamingo Skies'. Whereas the former was used in Channel 4
film 'Late Night Shopping', the latter - which holds her husky vocals
over a Herb Alpert break - has remained locked up in Rosslyn's vaults.
Drugs Crisis - Sandra Nubia Melody
Drugs Crisis 1.43 Mb
Sandra Nubia Melody has worked with a string of high profile reggae
artists, from Jazzie B to the chart topping 'No Scrubs' track with
Mafia & Fluxy. Her first recording in Scotland, titled 'Fade Away',
received heavy rotation across the globe with Patrick Forge hitting it
hard on his Kiss 100 'Cosmic Jam' show. Drugs Crisis marks a more
conscious lyrical content, with a reality check for young drug users,
warning them on how addiction can disintegrate their youth.
Gemini Flying High - Joe Thomas
Gemini Flying High 670.88 Kb
A fat-as groove on a rare thinly pressed Groove Merchant 1975 record.
Orchestrated and Conducted by Brad Baker, with Joe Thomas screaming sax
and a tight as rhythm section: Bob Babbitt (bass), Jerry Friedman
(guitar) and Steve Gadd (drums).
Senor Funk - Ray Barretto
Senor Funk 2.39 Mb
The 1977 Crusaders produced Atlantic LP 'Eye of the Beholder' finds
Barretto's introduction to the crunching rhythm of Senor Funk
containing what is arguably a rap, bugging away in the background. If
that's the case, then it should be considered well and truly ahead of
its time.
Sassy - GIT
Sassy 3.00 Mb
Recording
out of his makeshift studio in Bayridge, Brooklyn, GIT is one of the
most respected breaks dealers in New York. On beats, GIT predominantly
works with hip hop artists, reflecting his Wu Tang connections and
Staten Island roots. Yet like so many beat makers on the Easter
Seaboard USA, is now migrating to West London's broken beat sound,
bringing with him New York's famous disco horns for the ride.
Hit 'n' Run - Carl Craig (Moxies)
Hit n Run 2.96 Mb
Little is known about this rubbed up remix of Loletta Holloway Hit 'n'
Run other than its Carl Craig it's been hitting dance floors hard since
its release.
'Ego Riot' - Sidewinder, Yam-Who? Rework
Ego Riot 2.05 Mb
Glasgow's Fenetik label is en vogue right now. On its roster, Daniel
Ibbotson, Michael Hunter (aka Pablo) and Alan Bryden jazzier Sidewinder
project, whose debut album 'Resolution' became one of the labels first
releases. 'Ego Riot', the original 7" single to be lifted from the
album, gets reworked by the Yam-Who? Pirate Soul trio. All three
artists are renowned for their editing skills, little wonder they're
now working on the Sony Play Station's Grand Theft Auto soundtrack.
Storm Bird - Stewart Brown & Paul Harrison
Storm Bird 1.62 Mb
Recorded in Glasgow in 2001, and showcasing the gifted Stewart Brown on
Drums, Paul Harrison on Keys and Tom McNiven guests on trumpet.
Symbolic of the acoustic jazz coming out of Scotland which has seen
wider recognition of late with Colin Steele picking up the BBC Jazz
Award for Best Album 2004. Unearthed from the Roslin vaults, Stewart
Brown captures an intriguing tempo which unintentionally leans towards
Drum & Bass in a Good Looking Bukem kinda way.
Monticello - Monty Alexander Trio
Monticello 3.03 Mb
By grafting the traditions of American jazz to his authentic Jamaican
roots, pianist Monty Alexander has spent a lifetime exploring the rich
depths of musical and cultural diversity. Monticello is taken from the
1972 Rass! album 'We've Only Just Begun' was recorded live in
Rochester, NY and is a slow and powerful tune with a great bass line by
Eugene Wright, that sounds like it got lifted by Reuben Wilson two
years later for his version of Inner City Blues.
Skyscrapers - Deodato
'Deodato 2' was released in 1973, less than a year after the ground
breaking, chart topping and Grammy winning Prelude LP. Deodato
continued to recruit an enviable stellar cast of heavyweight musicians
with the likes of Billy Cobham, Ray Barretto and Stanley Clarke all
contributing to Deodato's unique jazz-inspired blend of funk and rock.
Infamously known as the record which literally broke the CTI label,
'Deodato 2' did not manage to match the sales of 'Prelude' yet in
hindsight, it is probably the better album. It also served as a
showcase for some of his best original compositions in the
jazz-funk-rock idiom, of which Skyscrapers is now considered a classic.
Opening with one of the best bass lines in the history of jazz funk,
its complex melodies, funky arrangement, staggering percussion and jazz
dance crescendo sounds like the title theme to a car chase thriller yet
to be filmed.
