Will has been part of the Analysis Lost team from day one, with his
input taking two primary forms: economics and music. It‰s his personal
ambition to unite both and advance the understanding of the music
industry for the benefit of all of its practitioners.
Examples of where economics is having a profound impact on our
understanding of the music and entertainment industries can be found in
the ëLong Tail‰ debate which has been pioneered by Chris Anderson of
Wired Magazine. Put simply, this refers to the increasing importance of
niche markets in on-line retailing, for example Amazon making an
estimated 50 per cent of their book sales on products which are not
available on the high street. Will is contributing to other areas of
economic analysis, including the ëOptimal level of piracy‰ debate as
well as the application of Auction Theory to the creative industries.
Through starting out in journalism for the international magazine Straight No Chaser,
his moonlighting career in the music industry has since spiraled into
artist development and label work. His big break came in 2002, where he
had a pivotal role in re-launching the career of Eumir Deodato. He‰s
since worked on (amongst others) Philadelphia‰s multicultural and
multilingual band Siora; Bronx-based MC and producer Djinji Brown; the
2004 BBC World Music Awards and Oakland-based hip hop trio Lunar
Heights š helping to secure vital industry exposure for them at the
South by South West festival. More recently, he tag-teamed with Thomas
Breslin to help deliver Rich Medina‰s long overdue assault on audiences
with a debut album set to drop in late 2005.
Will has contributed directly and indirectly on many of the projects
undertaken by ALP. This includes accessing music from artists like Fila
Brasilia for the development of Visiology VJ artistry, delivering a
mini documentary for Eumir Deodato, and drawing Hollywood producer
interest to Colin Perry‰s feature film script Panic Attack.
As a link-maker, Will is working on partnership projects with
Seattle-based Talent Match who have exclusive rights to the National
Lampoon franchise, and the Netherlands‰ North Sea Jazz festival,
pushing for a Visiology showcase as well as working on pitches for
artists to perform there. Current musical projects include
Brooklyn-based band Mudville and Sweden‰s Natalie Gardiner š both set
to take the industry by storm in 2006.
Full details and tracks from Will's annual mix CD Digging in the Vaults can be accessed from the sidebar, from which you can also link to Will's multivarious projects.
